The duo’s first and only album Monolith debuted in 1992, and steadily climbed to the top of the Billboard charts through word of mouth and their energetic live shows. By the time the album peaked at #3, it seemed that EXTENDED METAPHOR was being interviewed by every radio station and talk show in the country.
Monolith consists of the kind of blurry alt-rock so prominent in the early 90’s, but what makes EXTENDED METAPHOR so intriguing is not that their music was in any way revolutionary or pacesetting, but rather the beguiling way with which they dealt with their fame. At the last show the band ever played, the college rockers told the crowd, “thanks for being here, but if you heard about us through Rolling Stone, you might as well get out.”
